Population growth and increased stress caused by urbanization have led to social problems that are predicted to intensify in the future. Urban sustainability therefore requires horizontal and vertical integration across multiple levels of governance, guided by four principles: the planet has biophysical limits, human and natural systems are tightly intertwined and come together in cities, urban inequality undermines sustainability efforts, and cities are highly interconnected.

Centre researcher Thomas Elmqvist appointed editor-in-chief for a new journal on urban sustainability by Nature and RMIT University, Australia. Text. The journal, launched in October 2019, is part of Nature’s partner journals portfolio, NPJ. It is an open access, online-only peer-reviewed journal for urban scientists and policy makers.
Urban ecosystems (nature in cities) are seen as an integral part of a proposed local climate action rubric wherein policy measures and integrated planning guide lowcarbon/impact development to create more resilient and sustainable urban environments. Nature-based solutions are a popular means to build urban resilience while tackling sustainability challenges in our towns and cities.. There is a substantial body of evidence which shows that incorporating good quality green infrastructure, such as green spaces, green roofs, living walls and rain gardens, can have significant multiple benefits for climate, wildlife, and people. Urban sustainability and resilience thus present important goals for the 21st century. Given the magnitude, intensity and interconnectedness of the challenge ahead, there is a pressing need for interdisciplinary research on urban social-ecological systems that investigate the challenges of urban sustainability and resilience from diverse angles.
